At the beginning of this summer, more than a few members on our diverse staff, with skin tones that range from milk to cocoa, shared that they didn’t wear sunscreen regularly. The reasons varied: Some hated the goopiness, some blamed it for their breakouts, some with darker skin tones noted that they rarely burn so they don’t prioritize it. But the biggest offense, many agreed, was the awful chalky or even purplish cast it can leave behind.
Here’s the thing: Everyone, no matter their skin tone, needs to apply SPF every day. Sunscreen is the number one way to protect skin from UV damage, which can show up in the form of dark spots, wrinkles, loose skin, and in severe cases, cancer. The beauty team’s mission was obvious. We needed to find formulas that were good enough to change not only our staff’s minds but also their daily skincare habits.
So we collected all the chemical, mineral, and tinted SPF formulas we could get our hands on and asked our staffers to use them regularly. After months of testing, the team has found some favorites, from zinc-based formulas that blend into deeper tones to hydrating textures that give a beautiful glow. Keep reading to discover the sunscreens that are now permanent spots in our routines.

My poolside essentials: a fun hat and an effective sunscreen that doesn’t look chalky. I have the hat thing down, but finding the latter can be somewhat tricky for my skin tone. When I tried this, I knew I hit the sunscreen lottery. Lately, I am into tinted formulas to help even out my hyperpigmentation a bit, and this formula blends into my cocoa complexion pretty seamlessly—don’t be deceived by its beige hue! Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36

- Tinted formula, comes in one shade
Ever since my pregnancies, I’ve dealt with melasma, a skin condition that causes brown splotches to appear on my cheeks. UV light and blue light from screens make them much worse, but a good coating of a tinted, mineral-based sunscreen keeps them at bay. This Alastin formula has been one of my go-tos for years. It’s so easy to smooth on, and it offers moisture, antioxidants, and enough coverage that, most days, it acts as my foundation, too—it’s a teeny bit too dark for my fair skin, but it’s close enough. —Kate Sandoval Box, beauty director
Naturium Dew-Glow Moisturizer SPF 50

It feels great because it blends in completely, and I can tell it’s working; I’ve seen a decrease in the number of sun spots on my face! —J’nelle Agee, senior producer
